Academic Career
Professor Alejandro Nava Tovar holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Unidad Iztapalapa. He has been awarded the University Merit Medal granted by the UAM at master's level (2009) and also at doctoral level (2014). During his doctoral studies he carried out a research stay sponsored by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität, Kiel, Germany, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Robert Alexy, one of the most important and recognized philosophers of law in the world.

International Lecturer, Author of Essays and Translator
As a lecturer, Professor Nava has given conferences on legal argumentation, philosophy of law, political philosophy and criminology at various universities in Mexico, Germany, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Italy, Peru and Switzerland, while as an author he has published several book chapters, reviews and articles in Spanish, English, Portuguese and German for various publications in the fields of legal argumentation, philosophy of law, political philosophy and criminology, for prestigious international journals and publishing houses (Universidad Externado de Colombia, Editorial Diego Portales, INACIPE, Marcial Pons, Forense Universitária, Revista Cubana de Derecho, Universidad Externado de Colombia, Düsseldorf University Press, Anthropos/Siglo XXI Editores, Springer and Mohr Siebeck). As for his work as a translator, he has carried out translations on topics related to philosophy of law, political philosophy and constitutional law. In 2019 his first work as a translator was published under the title “The Philosophy of Law of Gustav Radbruch”, by the renowned specialist Stanley L. Paulson, under the publishing house Marcial Pons (this work was translated in 2023 into Italian by Mimesis Publishing House).

Author of Books
Professor Nava has published four works, dedicated to the philosophy of law, legal argumentation and political philosophy. In January 2015 he published his first work, entitled “La institucionalización de la razón. La filosofía del derecho de Robert Alexy”, edited by UAM Iztapalapa and Editorial Anthropos/Siglo XXI. In December 2020 he published his second work, entitled “Argumentación jurídica”, under the editorial seal of the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Penales (INACIPE). In August 2021 he published his third work, “Populismo punitivo”, under the publishing imprint of the National Institute of Criminal Sciences (INACIPE) and Editorial ZELA in Puno, Peru. In 2023 he published "Filosofía política de la pena. Una lectura filosófica sobre los fundamentos de la pena estatal" (INACIPE). In 2024 “Populismo punitivo” was translated into Italian by prof. Dr. Valeria Giordano for the Italian publisher Castelvecchi. Finally, in 2025 the Second Edition of “Populismo Punitivo” appeared, which contains a presentation by Prof. Dr. Eugenio Raúl Zaffaroni.

Editor
In his work as editor, in 2023 Professor Nava co-edited with Cláudia Toledo, Arnulfo Daniel Mateos Durán and Gonzalo Villa-Rosas the work “Derecho, argumentación y ponderación. Ensayos en honor a Robert Alexy”, published by the Universidad Externado de Colombia, and in 2024 he edited with Gustavo Leyva “La Filosofía del Derecho de Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Sentido, problemas y perspectivas”, published by the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana and devoted to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's “Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts”. Thus, Professor Nava's work, both as author, editor and translator, covers philosophical-political and philosophical-legal topics, and extends to five languages.

Previous and Current Academic Position
During his academic career Professor Nava was a professor-researcher at the National Institute of Criminal Sciences (2017-2023), professor at the Postgraduate Program in Law at UNAM (2015-2023), professor of various courses at the Federal Judiciary Institute (2016-2023) and invited postgraduate professor at the Advanced Master in Global Rule of Law and Constitutional Democracy at the Istituto Tarello per la filosofia del diritto - Università degli Studi di Genova (2023-2025). He is currently a Full Time Professor and researcher at the Law Department of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Unidad Azcapotzalco, Professor of Legal Philosophy at the Postgraduate Program in Moral and Political Philosophy at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, CUnidad Iztapalapa, and Level II of Mexico's National System of Researchers  .

Academic Distinctions
By Resolution No. 20 of November 14, 2025, issued by Dr. Andry Mantilla Correa, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Havana, Alejandro Nava Tovar was awarded the title of “Distinguished Professor”. This is the first time this title has been granted to a Mexican law professor.
