Profile
Dr. Diego Esquivel is a Level I National Researcher of the National System of Researchers (Area 2 Biology and Chemistry). In 2015, he was awarded a scholarship by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Program (Marie Curie Actions) to carry out a doctoral study and obtain a specialization in yeast fermentation processes and adaptive evolution at the Department of Chemical Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II, in Naples Italy. Furthermore, in 2014, he completed a doctoral stay at the Biomex company (Guadalajara, Mexico), where he specialized in cultivating microalgae and cyanobacteria on a pilot and industrial scale.
As an associate postdoctoral researcher at Instituto de Biotecnología (UNAM), Instituto de Ecología (UNAM), and Instituto Nacional de Medicina Genómica (INMEGEN), he has participated in various research groups, where he has obtained a series of specializations in topics such as Bioinformatics, Sytems Biology, Data Science, Microbial Ecology of patients with type 2 diabetes, the Microbial Ecology of Extremophiles, Bioremediation through biofilm bioreactors (MBfR), Yeast Fermentation Biotechnology, and Biorefineries with microalgae and cyanobacteria.
He has participated in national and international conferences on Green Chemistry, Environmental Biotechnology, Microbial Ecology, and Systems Biology. He is also a member of the Mexican Bioinformatics Network, the Mexican Society of Biochemistry, and the Mexican Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering.
He is the author of scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals such as Gut Microbes, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Scientific Reports, Bioresource Technology, Frontiers in Microbiology, Frontiers in Endocrinology, Journal of Environmental Management, and Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining.
In September 2023, he obtained the Carlos Casas Campillo Award from the Mexican Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, awarded to young professionals under 35 years of age for their contribution to the development of Biotechnology or Bioengineering in Mexico.
He is currently a Visiting Professor in the Department of Processes and Technology of the Division of Natural Sciences and Engineering, Cuajimalpa Campus of UAM.
