Profile
Dr. Gregorio Hernández Zamora earned his Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Culture from the University of California, Berkeley (United States). He holds the rank of National Researcher Level II in Mexico's Sistema Nacional de Investigadoras e Investigadores (SNII).
He serves as a Professor-Researcher in the Department of Education and Communication within the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Xochimilco. At the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), he founded the Language and Literacy track in the Graduate Program in Pedagogy and taught courses in Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Digital Expression and Design.
His career includes designing and co-authoring various educational materials for students and teachers in basic and higher education. He has authored and co-authored over 170 academic, educational, outreach, and journalistic publications. Among his books are Decolonizing Literacy (2010), Literacidad Académica (2016), Jóvenes migrantes en Norte América (2017), and Didáctica en Acción (2019).
Additionally, he has published prominent articles and book chapters, such as Pobres pero leídos (CONACULTA, 2005), Literacy (Handbook of Educational Linguistics, Blackwell, 2008), Digital Literacy as a Tool for Self-Authoring (Journal of Global Literacies, Technologies, and Emerging Pedagogies, 2014), La metáfora de las TIC como Herramientas educativas (Didac, 2015), Expresión y diseño digital: La praxis pedagógica como conocimiento legítimo (Universidad de Guadalajara, 2018), De los nuevos estudios de literacidad a las perspectivas decoloniales en la investigación sobre literacidad (Íkala: Lengua y Cultura, 2019), Critical Literacies in Mexico (Handbook of Critical Literacies, Routledge, 2022), Literacidad y decolonialidad en la educación de jóvenes y adultos: Crónica de un encuentro en Iztapalapa, México (Education Policy Analysis Archives, 2023), Escribir en la universidad: dilemas entre lo académico, lo político y lo pedagógico (2024), and Diseño, tecnologías y educación (Diseño en síntesis, 2024).
In 2019, he was invited by UNESCO to its headquarters in Paris to speak at International Literacy Day in recognition of his contributions to language, culture, and education. In 2021, he chaired the Jury for the National Prize for Arts and Literature awarded by the Government of Mexico.
