Profile
Professor-Researcher of Education, Communication and Design at the UAM, Xochimilco Campus. National researcher SNII-2. At UNAM he was founder of the Language and Literacy research line of the postgraduate course in Pedagogy and professor of Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Digital Expression and Design.
He received his PhD in Language and Written Culture from the University of California at Berkeley, USA.
Designer and co-author of various educational materials for students and teachers of basic and higher education. Author and co-author of more than 170 academic, educational, popular and journalistic publications, including the books: Decolonizing Literacy (2010); Academic Literacy (2016); Young migrants in North America (2017), and Didactics in Action (2019), as well as the articles and chapters: Poor but readers (2005, CONACULTA), Literacy (2008, Handbook of Educational Linguistics, Blackwell), The metaphor of ICT as educational tools (2015, Didac), Digital Literacy as a Tool for Self-Authoring (2014, Journal of Global Literacies, Technologies, and Emerging Pedagogies); Expression and digital design: Pedagogical praxis as legitimate knowledge (2018, University of Guadalajara); From new literacy studies to decolonial perspectives in literacy research (2019, Íkala: Lengua y Cultura); Critical Literacies in Mexico (2022, Handbook of Critical Literacies, Routledge); Literacy and decoloniality in the education of youth and adults: Chronicle of a meeting in Iztapalapa, Mexico (2023, Analytical Archives of Educational Policy); Writing at the university: dilemmas between the academic, the political and the pedagogical (2024).
In 2019 he was invited by UNESCO to its headquarters in Paris to speak on International Literacy Day, in recognition of his contributions to language, culture and education. In 2021 he chaired the Jury of the National Prize for Arts and Literature (Government of Mexico).
