Profile
Professor Humberto García Arellano is a Biochemical Engineer graduated from the Instituto Tecnológico de Veracruz (1997). He attended graduate studies at the Institute of Biotechnology of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and obtained the degree of Doctor in Biochemical Sciences with specialization in biocatalysis (2002) with the thesis "Design of a thermostable biocatalyst by chemical modification of hemoproteins". He did a postdoctoral stay (2002-2005) at the Instituto de Catálisis y Petroleoquímica del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in Madrid, Spain. In January 2006, with the support of the CONACYT repatriation scholarship program, he joined the Institute of Biomedical Research of UNAM as an Associate Researcher, and in March 2011, he joined the Department of Environmental Sciences of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Lerma Campus, where he is currently Professor.
Professor Humberto García Arellano has taught different undergraduate and graduate courses, including thermodynamics, matter and energy balances, biochemistry, applied biocatalysis, bioremediation, bioenergetics, physicochemistry of macromolecules and biostatistics, as well as biochemistry, microbiology and biocatalysis laboratories. Regarding human resources training, Dr. García Arellano has directed six social service students, six bachelor's theses, two specialization theses, one master's thesis. Regarding his university work, Professor García Arellano has been the representative of professors of his department before the Divisional Council and the Academic Council. He has also participated in different academic commissions, including the Divisional Examining Commission and the DCBS Studies Committee.
Regarding his work in the preservation and dissemination of culture, Dr. Garcia Arellano is part of the editorial committee of the journal Biocatalysis and Biotransformations and has participated in evaluation committees for CONACYT and Consejo Mexiquense de Ciencia y Tecnología (COMECYT). He is a reviewer for different national and international journals. In research, Dr. Garcia Arellano has been part of the "Iberoamerican Network for the Extraction and Enzymatic Transformation of Functional and Nutraceutical Ingredients from Plants and Regional Agro-residues" and the network "Immobilized Laccase for the Degradation of Aromatic Compounds in Wastewater", both sponsored by the Iberoamerican Program of Science and Technology for Development (CYTED). He is a member of the technical-academic committee of the network "Biocatalysis for the Food, Technical and Medical Industries" and is also a full member of the Mexican Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering.
Professor Garcia Arellano has 27 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 11 book chapters published by prestigious publishers, and has presented more than 40 papers at national and international conferences. His papers have received more than 700 citations. He has been a member of the National System of Researchers uninterruptedly since 2006, currently at Level I.
