Profile

Doctor Jan Bazant Y Sánchez is an Architect who graduated from the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey (1967), Master of advanced studies in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (1975), and a Ph.D. in urban planning from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) with an honor award (1999). He took several courses in urban planning at the Politecnico di Milano (Milan, Italy), urban research at the Centre de Recherche d ´Urbanisme (Paris, France), and low-income housing at the Bouwcentrum (Rotterdam, Holland).

He has been a professor since 1976 at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), teaching in the Department of Methods and Systems in the Division of Sciences and Arts for Design at the Xochimilco Campus.

Within the results of the research work, some topics have obtained achievements such as the publication of ten books in Editorial Trillas, four books in Editorial LIMUSA and two books in Editorial Diana; more book chapters, articles in peer-reviewed journals, and participation as a keynote speaker at international and national conferences.

He has obtained the Alfonso Caso Medal from UNAM (1999) and the Annual Research Award from UAM (2000).

His main research themes and its products are the following.

Urban growth and low-income housing. Several field types of research that analyzed the chaotic and anarchic expansion of our cities were published in 3 books: "Periferias urbanas", "Asentamientos irregulares" and "Viviendas progresivas", all by Editorial Trillas.

Urban design which analizes basically the urban mobility of motor vehicles and pedestrians in the cities, and where published as two books by Editorial Trillas as "Manual de diseño urbano" and "Movilidad y planeación urbana estratégica". And two books by Editorial LIMUSA "Espacios urbanos. Historia, teoría y práctica" and " Fraccionamientos: Diseño y evaluación financiera".

Climatic change. It focuses on basic analysis of the impact that climatic change is having on urban dwellers, which where published as two books: "Cambio climático y desastres urbanos" and "Hacia un desarrollo urbano sustentable" by Editorial LIMUSA and one book by Editorial Trillas "Evaluación de impacto ambiental urbano".

Urban space for humans. Research that analyses the area that pedestrians and urban dwellers are losing as motor vehicles invade urban spaces proposes essential urban design criteria to solve some fundamental habitat problems. The book is published by Editorial Trillas as: "Microurbanismo. Al rescate del peatón en los espacios urbanos".

Urban Densification. The year 2001, when the new mortgage credit law was enacted, triggered a real estate boom in all the country's cities and very noticeably in the capital cities, which gave rise to the construction of apartment buildings, offices, and service buildings, as well as shopping centers. These, in turn, increased the value of the areas where they were built, which led to the gradual densification of the intermediate zones and primary roads of the cities. But the process of construction densification also had secondary effects, as it induced mobility of residents (displacing higher-income and middle-income residents who could pay the mortgage loans), a greater concentration of residents or employees who came to work in the surrounding buildings, and a proliferation of tertiary activities, all of which changed the physical and spatial physiognomy of the urban environment of the cities.

He has published chapters in books, articles in indexed magazines, and assisted national and international congresses as the main speaker.
