Dr. Rina María González Cervantes is currently a professor-researcher in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Lerma Campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM).

She has been a lecturer in the Bachelor's programs of QFB at the Xochimilco Campus, Environmental Biology at Lerma Campus; Postgraduate studies in Agricultural Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and a Doctorate in Biological and Health Sciences at UAM.

Her academic background includes a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, a Master's degree in Biotechnology from the Institute of Biomedical Research, UNAM, where she conducted her thesis on the regulation of gentamicin synthesis in Micromonospora purpurea. She graduated with a Doctorate in Biological Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, with her thesis focusing on the effect of oxygen on the glucose metabolism of Bifidobacterium infantis; this project was done in collaboration with Dr. Carmen Wacher from the Department of Biotechnology and Food of the Faculty of Chemistry at UNAM.

She conducted a sabbatical research stay in the Department of Microbial Ecology at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. She was a member of the research area of Microbial Processes in the Department of Biological Systems at the Xochimilco Campus of UAM and currently participates in the research area of Biotechnology and Environmental Microbiology at Lerma Campus of UAM.

Her research work has focused on industrial microbiology, physiology of probiotic microorganisms mainly of the genus Bifidobacterium. Her main research interest is molecular microbial ecology in different ecosystems; she is currently involved in several projects such as: human breast milk microbiome and study of galacto-oligosaccharide synthesis, isolation and conservation of microbial consortia of interest in health and environmental sectors; gut-brain axis microbiome; genetics and physiology of probiotic bacteria.
