Professor Mónica Alicia Meraz Rodríguez holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) and is attached to the Department of Biotechnology. She is a National Researcher Level II of the SNI. She specializes in developing biological processes for wastewater treatment, with special emphasis on treating atypical effluents with a high concentration of organic matter (stillage and compost leachates).

She has 65 scientific publications and 635 citations (H index = 13). She has supervised 17 thesis students: five at Ph.D. level, eight at Master's level, four at Specialization level, and 21 at Bachelor's level. Responsible for research projects sponsored by ANUIES-EcosNord, CONACyT-CONAGUA, SECYTI, and UAM. Creation of the Environmental Remediation Research Area of the Postgraduate Program in Energy and Environment and participation in the Postgraduate Program in Biotechnology. With 35 years of teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate levels (325 courses taught).
