Profile

Doctor Margarita del Carmen Zárate Vidal has been a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Iztapalapa Campus, Mexico City, since 1987. She is a National Researcher SNI, level I. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from University College London, London, England. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on Anthropological Theories, Field Research, and Selected Topics in Contemporary Anthropology. In the period October 2017-October 2019 she served as coordinator of the Graduate Program in Anthropological Sciences at UAM Iztapalapa Campus.

Line of Research Political Anthropology of collective actions (organizations, struggles, and resistance). At this stage (on sabbatical until May 2021), she is researching the actions of resistance and resilience to the various forms of violence that exist in our country, particularly in the state of Veracruz.

Throughout her academic career, she has researched on Ethnicity, Domestic Groups in Totonaca societies of the Sierra Norte de Puebla; Ethnicity and forms of political organization in Michoacan peasant populations of Purepecha origin, migration and transnational processes; and forms of resistance and resilience to the various forms that violence takes.

Among her most recent publications are: Resistances and Transnational Social Movements in Alteridades 50, October 2015 Between Sierras, Coast and Cities. Michoacán Multicultural in Estado del Desarrollo Económico Social de los Pueblos Indígenas de Michoacán, coordinated by José del Val, Carolina Sánchez and Carlos Zollá, edited by the Programa Universitario de Estudios de la Diversidad Cultural y la Interculturalidad (UNAM) and the Escuela Nacional de Estudios Superiores Unidad Morelia, 2018. Emotions and Social Movements in Culture and Affectivity. Anthropological and Philosophical Approaches to the Study of Emotions (2018) coordinated by Edith Calderón and Antonio Zirión, Ediciones del Lirio and Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Iztapalapa Campus. Co-coordination with Florence Rosemberg Seifer of the issue Antropología, violencia y emociones. Alteridades, year 29, no. 58, July-December 2019. Three works are in the process of publication: De cayucos y violencias. An approach to violence in Veracruz, in a volume compiled by Myriam Jimeno and Andrés Góngora at the National University of Colombia. Los jóvenes y las emociones, sujetos de la protesta in Territorios juveniles y estrategias divergentes, coordinated by Alfredo Nateras in the process of being edited (they have not advised if it is a co-publication of the UAM Unidad Iztapalapa Campus with another publisher). El nacionalismo y las violencias en tiempos de la Cuarta Transformación in a volume on El Nacionalismo e identidad en la cuarta transformación, being compiled by Fernando Vizcaíno of UNAM's Instituto de Investigaciones Sociales.

This year she published the book Veracruz en asedio with the support of the Department of Anthropology of the UAM Iztapalapa Campus and Editorial Del Lirio; and the article Urbanismo, política e pandemia na América Latina, in the Revista de Ciencias Sociales with Doctor María Gabriela Hita.
