Profile

He was born in Mexico City in 1961. Dr. Sentíes studied Biology at the Faculty of Science, UNAM, from 1980 to 1984; also, and in the same institution, he concluded the master's and Ph.D. in Sciences (Biology) in 1993 and 2000, respectively.

In 1985 he entered as a full-time research professor indeterminate by opposition contest at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Iztapalapa Campus, where he has developed his entire academic career. From 1989-1990 he made a stay at the Botany Institute of Sao Paulo, Brazil; He also made short stays at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC., and at the Jepson Herbarium of the University of California, Berkeley Campus, in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Later in the University of La Laguna in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain (2006, 2010) and the University of Azores, Portugal (2011).

Since 1998 it has belonged to the National System of Researchers, reaching in 2013 level 2, which it maintains to date. He has published 97 articles, 87 indexed in specialized scientific journals, 9 book chapters and two books, always around Marine Phycology, on taxonomy, phylogenetic, floristic, ecology, biogeography, phylogeography, and conservation biology. His works have been cited on about 1100 occasions. Dr. Sentíes has directed eight doctoral theses, four master's degrees, and 17 papers for completing a bachelor's degree, added to the teaching of more than 300 courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Likewise, at the Botany Institute, at the University of Sao Paulo, and the University of Pernambuco, Brazil, he has taught courses at the graduate level. He has been responsible for research projects at UAM, Iztapalapa Campus, Ministry of Education and Science of the Spanish Government, the Latin American Botany Network in Chile, and the Botany Institute and the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

His administrative academic work has been diverse, from the incumbent representative to the Divisional Council (1988-1989), to the coordinator of the degree in Hydrobiology (1990-1993), head of the area of Experimental Hydrobiology (1994-1995). Subsequently, head of the Department of Hydrobiology (2000-2004), member of the commission of the Doctorate in Biological Sciences (2007-2011), coordinator of the Master in Biology (2011-2013), until divisional coordinator of the Postgraduate in CBS (2013) and currently occupies the position of head of the Comparative Phycology area (2014-). Finally, he has developed the work of editor-in-chief and associate of several national and international journals. For example, in the Hydrobiológica magazine (1995-2007) and editorial coordinator of the CBS division (in 2 periods: 2007-2011; 2019-) of our institution.
