Profile
Professor Flores Pedroche got his Biology degree in 1978, his Master of Science degree in 1981, and his Doctorate in 1998, all from the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He made a five-year stay at the University of California, Berkeley, where he developed his research work to obtain this last degree. He was a member of the Faculty of Sciences, UNAM, as a teaching assistant (1977-1978). Scholarship holder for Master (1978-1981) and Doctorate studies (1981-1983) by the PSPA Program from UNAM. Professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), in the Department of Hydrobiology, Division of Biological and Health Sciences (CBS), Iztapalapa Campus (1983-2009), and in the Department of Environmental Sciences, CBS, Lerma Campus (2009 -). Since 1993 he has been a Research Associate at the University Herbarium, University of California at Berkeley. He was an OAS Fellow in the PRA Program (1993-1995) and Visiting Scholar, University Herbaria, UC-Berkeley (1993-1998). His fields of expertise are Phycology. Phylogenetic systematics, taxonomy, and nomenclature.
At UAM Iztapalapa Campus, he founded the Marine Phycology group, as well as the Journal Hidrobiológica. He formalized the line of Phylogenetic and Molecular Systematics in the study of marine algae, publishing the first Mexican paper in these areas of knowledge. In 1999 he joined as a member of the Bureau of Nomenclature (Algae) of the International Association of Plant Taxonomy (IAPT). He was Vice President of the Phycological Society of Latin America and the Caribbean (SOFILAC) in 2012 and President of the same association from 2013 to 2015. He served as President of the Mexican Society of Phycology (SOMFICO) (2014-2016) and a Member of the Board of Directors of the International Phycological Society (IPS) (2016-2018). Member of SNI level 1 (2011-2021). Professor PROMEP profile (2004-2018) and Head of the Academic group "Systematic Phycology" PRODEP (2006-2020). Regular Member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2017 -).
He has been Coordinator of the degree program in Biology (1984), Academic Secretary (1985-1986), Head of the Department of Hydrobiology (1986-1990), Academic Secretary (2004-2006) and Dean (2006-2009), all this in the CBS Division of the UAM-I. He was the founding Rector (Chancellor) of the UAM Campus Lerma (2009-2013), and since then, his affiliation has been in the Department of Environmental Sciences, CBS of this Campus.
Its production includes: scientific publications (72), referee of papers and books (97), talks at national and international scientific events (115), courses taught at the undergraduate and graduate level (170), theses advisor (15), conferences (24 ), notes and dissemination articles (22). He has participated in the formation of some of the most essential phycologists in Mexico, the majority currently members of the SNI. In collaboration with other professors, he designed the Degree program in Hydrobiology, current program of the UAM. In 2010 he worked in an innovative educational model for the UAM Campus Lerma.
