Profile
Professor J. Gerardo Saucedo-Castañeda completed the Bachelor of Food Engineering (1982) and a Master´s in Chemical Engineering (1987) at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), Iztapalapa Campus. In 1991 he completed his Ph.D. at the University de Montpellier II, France. He carried out a postdoctoral stay (1992) at the ORSTOM Center (now IRD) in Montpellier. He is a Qualified Professor (2011) by the University of Aix Marseille, France.
He was the Postgraduate Coordinator during the foundation of the Doctorate in Biotechnology (1996), Head of the Department of Biotechnology (1998-2000), and Director of the Division of Biological and Health Sciences (2000-04).
He is an expert in bioprocess engineering of solid-state fermentation and transport phenomena in biological processes. His lines of research are the treatment of organic residues (municipal, agro-industrial, and forestry) for the production of biofuels, obtaining compounds with biological activities from agro-industrial waste, and production of biosurfactants by solid-state fermentation.
He has 74 international publications (JCR), five national publications (CONACYT), 19 book chapters, co-edition of a book, more than 300 participations in congresses; he has more than 1475 citations (Scopus), and an h factor of 22 and an i10 index of 44 (Google academic). He has directed more than 31 terminal projects for the Bachelor's degree, 10 Specialization, 16 Master's degree, and 12 Ph.D. He has 6 patents of which two were granted by the IMPI and one of them is in commercialization. He has been responsible for 22 sponsored projects. He has maintained scientific collaborations with different instances of the government as well as companies in the biotechnology and chemical sector.
Currently he is a professor at the UAM Iztapalapa Campus, Member of the Transversal Technological Academic Commission of the SNI (2016-18); Continuous member of the National Research System (Mexico, SNI) since 1987, President (2012-2014) and Vice President (2010-2012) of the Mexican Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering. Named Distinguished Professor by the Academic College of the UAM in June 2017.
