Profile

Professor Francisco Cruz Sosa obtained a chemical degree from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in 1979, a master of science from the UNAM in 1984 a doctorate from the UNAM in 1988. He entered the Biotechnology Department of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Iztapalapa Campus in 1984, where he is currently a Professor with a permanent scholarship level. Since joining the Biotechnology Department, he was appointed professor of the general chemistry and organic chemistry courses, and from October 1989 to August 2008, he was head of the Natural Products Area of the Biotechnology Department.

His research focuses on the production of secondary metabolites as bioactive compounds of interest from plants and plant organs in plant cell cultures. Furthermore, he participates in the design of micro and nanoencapsulation systems to protect secondary metabolites as bioactive compounds and with controlled release capacity. He is the author of 86 publications, of which there are registered in indexed journals with peer review and impact factor 67 in Web of Science and 64 in Scopus, eight book chapters, and 11 diffusion articles.

He has taught continuously since 1984, as Associate Professor from 1984 to 1988 at the UAM Iztapalapa Campus, and as Professor from 1989 to date in the degrees of Food Engineering and Industrial Biochemical Engineering in the Division of Biological Sciences and of the Health of the UAM Iztapalapa Campus. He has organized five national congresses and presented six invited conferences. He is a member of the core of the Postgraduate in Biotechnology (International Quality) under his direction; two bachelor theses, eleven master's, and 22 doctorate theses have been completed.

In the Biotechnology Department of the UAM Iztapalapa Campus, he was the founder of the Laboratory of Plant Tissue cultures of which he is currently responsible for, and participate in internal research projects of the UAM Iztapalapa Campus and in research projects sponsored by CONACYT and PRODEP. In addition, he collaborates with researchers from other research groups at UAM and from external higher education institutions.

In recognition of his academic career, he has been invited to participate in evaluation committees of CONACYT: 1) Basic Science 2) CONACYT-PEI 3) National Problems 4) Postdoctoral Stays Abroad 5) Sabbatical Stays Abroad 6) FOMIX GTO-2018-01 7) FOMIX-Hidalgo 8) CONACYT-CDTI-2015. 9) Science of Border.

He has been invited to review research articles from indexed journals with impact factor 1) Elsevier ((Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine, Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology, Current Plant Biology, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, Food Hydrocolloids, Industrial Crops and Products, Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Journal of Functional Foods, South African Journal of Botany, The Plant Biotechnology Journal) 2) MDPI (Molecules). 3) Springer (Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering, BMC Plant Biology, Cytotechnology, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, In vitro Plant Development Biology Plant Cell Tissue and Organ Culture, Scientific Reports). 4) Agronomic Act (National University of Colombia). 5) Bentham Science (The Natural Products Journal) 6) Hindawi (International Journal of Forestry Research, International Journal of Inflammation, Journal of Food Quality) 7) UAM-Iztapalapa (Mexican Journal of Chemical Engineering).
