Profile

He was born in Mexico City and pursued his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), obtaining the title of QFB (Bachelor in Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemistry). He completed his master's degree in Biotechnology at the Institute of Biomedical Research of the same University and earned a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) and he conducted postdoctoral studies at the Food Research and Development Centre in Saint Hyacinthe, Québec, Canada, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

He initiated his career as an independent researcher in the Department of Biological Systems at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, where he currently holds the position of Full Professor "C." With over 40 years of experience at UAM, he holds Level I accreditation in the National System of Researchers (SNI).

To date, he has authored more than 50 publications on microbiology in national and international journals, accumulating over 350 citations to his work. He has participated in over 100 presentations at conferences in Mexico and abroad, delivering 30 lectures on the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Additionally, he has been involved in teaching courses and seminars on biotechnology, food, enzymes, and microbiology at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at UAM, UNAM, IPN, and other national universities.

Within these disciplines, he has supervised numerous undergraduate theses or social service projects, 15 master's theses, and 9 doctoral theses. He has also coordinated the work of a postdoctoral student and two researchers through Mexico's Conacyt Chairs. Of the Ph.D. graduates, six currently serve as independent Group Leaders in various institutions. The Master's graduates are employed in both academic and industrial sectors. As a professor, he has participated in different academic and collegiate bodies of the University.

Since the beginning of his career as an independent researcher, his primary focus has been on hydrolytic enzymes with glycosyltransferase activity for the production of oligosaccharides from lactic acid bacteria, yeast, and bifidobacteria. Currently, his areas of interest include the isolation and biochemical, microbiological, and molecular characterization of probiotic bacteria and bacteria considered uncultivable. He investigates their probiotic functionality for human, animal, and soil use, employing omics tools.
