Dr. María Concepción Gutiérrez Ruiz trained in Chemistry, earned a master’s degree in Experimental Biology, and completed a PhD in Pharmacology. She joined the Department of Health Sciences at UAM, Iztapalapa Campus, in 1976, where she built a distinguished academic career. She held several academic-administrative positions, most notably as Divisional Graduate Coordinator.

Her field of study focused on identifying mechanisms of damage and repair in different cell types at both the cellular and molecular levels, caused by a range of harmful agents, including ethanol, acetaldehyde, lipid and cholesterol overload, and heavy metals, among others.

She published 121 research articles and 27 book chapters. She supervised more than 40 graduate theses, which contributed to her recognition as a Level III National Researcher in the National System of Researchers beginning in January 2009. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses for 44 years. In 2005, she received the title of Distinguished Professor from UAM.

She participated in decision-making bodies at various academic and scientific institutions.
