Professor Jorge Rogelio Quintana y Molina, born on April 13, 1946, in Mexico City, earned his degree in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences at UNAM and pursued a Master’s at UNAM (incomplete) as well as a Master’s in Sciences from the Oceanographic Institute at the University of Oriente in Cumaná, Venezuela. He achieved a SCUBA Diving Master certification, with research diving experience in the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the Red Sea reefs (Aqaba), the Canadian Arctic (Bamfield Marine Station), the Mexican, Colombian, Venezuelan, and Cuban Caribbean (Ma. la Gorda), Baja California, and the Mediterranean Sea in Greece (Zakynthos), as well as in Mexican reefs in the Caribbean and Veracruz.
Throughout his career, he received several recognitions, including a UNAM scholarship to study his undergraduate degree at the Faculty of Sciences, a CONACyT scholarship for a scientific stay in Canada, UAM Iztapalapa Unit scholarships, and a CONACyT scholarship (for one year) to pursue a Master’s in Marine Biology at the Oceanographic Institute in Cumaná, Venezuela.
Among his contributions, his participation in international and national conferences on marine botany, zoology, and oceanography stood out, with presentations on his research on the ecology of aquatic ecosystems in Mexico, Canada, and Venezuela.
He held various positions in academic bodies, including the first Area Head of the Department of Hydrobiology, representative to the CBS Library, divisional council member of the Hydrobiology Department, and Academic Council member of the same department.
In the field of scientific outreach, he contributed an article to the first issue of the Revista Hidrobiológica and promoted science through the Hydrobiology Museum of UAM Iztapalapa Unit (now closed) with a conservationist focus. He organized science outreach weeks at CBS, participated in the weekly publication of UAM Iztapalapa Unit, on UAM Radio, in traveling exhibitions, and delivered lectures at cultural centers in Mexico City and various states in the republic, as well as at the CONCyTEC in Querétaro and exhibitions in Mexico City's Metro, addressing topics related to his research. Additionally, he presented at national and international conferences on botany, zoology, and oceanography.
He was a professor at UAM Iztapalapa Unit, attached to the Department of Hydrobiology for more than 45 years, contributing to the teaching of science, hydrobiology, marine ecology, biological diversity, and zoobenthos (ecology of marine benthic organisms). He taught Zoology I, II, and III in the Department of Biology at UAM Iztapalapa Unit.
Additionally, he worked as an adjunct professor at Simón Bolívar University, at Universidad del Mar in Oaxaca, and in the Faculty of Biology at Universidad Veracruzana, occupying these positions during his sabbatical periods.
