Profile
Professor María Estela Beatriz López y Cervantes began her academic journey in 1976 in the field of Library Science at the School of Library Science within the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She later enriched her academic preparation by pursuing a Master’s Degree in Mexican History at the same institution. For over 30 years, she built her career as a faculty member in the Interdivisional Core Curriculum and the Core Curriculum of Social Sciences at the Xochimilco Campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM).
Her research focused primarily on Bibliographic Sciences, with a transdisciplinary approach that incorporated Social Sciences. She was particularly notable for her dedication to creating institutional bibliographies that documented the academic output of the three divisions (CSH, CBS, and CAD) that make up the Xochimilco Campus of the UAM.
Drawing on her education at UNAM’s Faculty of Philosophy and Literature, she contributed in 1983 to the compilation of the Repertoire of Bibliographic Production of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Among her most prominent publications are Bibliography on the Modular System (2010), Index of Periodical Publications of the Social Sciences Division of UAM, Xochimilco Campus (1990-2019), Catalog of Publications of the Department of Education and Communication (1980-2018), and Catalog of Publications of the Department of Politics and Culture (1980-2018).
Throughout her career, she received numerous accolades, including the 2016 Research Areas Award granted by the Academic Council of UAM, Xochimilco Campus. She also contributed to the research project “Typology of Mexican Industry” in 1991 and participated in the National Meeting on Fisheries Scientific Research organized by the Ministry of Fisheries in 1982.
One of the highlights of her career was her participation in the presentation of the book José Ignacio Mantecón: Life and Work of an Exiled Aragonese, by Marco Aurelio Torres H. Mantecón, in 2006, held at the Ateneo Español de México.
Her academic work was guided by the vision of being a pioneer in facilitating more accessible, practical, and open access to academic output, aiming to enhance teaching-learning processes, research, and the dissemination of information for the benefit of the university community.
