Recognition as Distinguished Professor approved during the 377th Session of the Academic College held on February 26-27, 2015.

Dr. Sergio Revah, now a retired professor from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, is recognized for his outstanding academic and scientific career. He studied Chemical Engineering at UNAM (1971-1975), earned a Master’s degree in Food Science and Technology from the University of California at Davis (1977-1978), and obtained his PhD in Bioprocesses from the Université de Technologie de Compiègne, France (1983-1986). He also pursued postgraduate studies in the Advanced Studies Program in Sustainable Development at El Colegio de México (1992-1994).

He began his teaching career in 1976 as an assistant professor at the Iztapalapa Campus and concluded his tenure as a Full Professor (Titular C) at the Cuajimalpa Campus. Throughout his career, he conducted high-impact research in the field of environmental biotechnology, addressing topics such as biological treatment of contaminated air, biofilters and biotrickling filters, odor and hydrocarbon removal, fungal biofilters, and the treatment of sulfides in liquids and air.

Dr. Revah’s work was supported by national academic and scientific institutions such as Conacyt, IMP, INE, and ICyTDF, as well as international organizations like the IAEA, OAS, EU, AECDI (Spain), and Conicyt (Chile). He actively participated in evaluation committees for the National System of Researchers (SNI), Conacyt projects, and academic chairs. He was also a member of the Scientific Council of the IRD in France for four years. In the field of collaboration, he led projects with national and international companies and contributed to the creation of two successful technology-based companies.

Throughout his career, Dr. Revah received numerous distinctions, including being a Level 3 member of the SNI since 1996, the Ciba-Geigy Award in Environmental Technologies, the “Manuel Noriega Morales” Science and Technology Award from the Organization of American States, the 2010 National Prize for Arts and Sciences in Technology, and the 2016 Medal of Merit in Science and Arts in Biotechnology, awarded by the Legislative Assembly of Mexico City. Additionally, he was named Distinguished Professor of the UAM in 2015, a full member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, and a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science.

Dr. Sergio Revah’s legacy remains a benchmark at UAM and in the field of environmental biotechnology both nationally and internationally.
