In memoriam

Doctor José Antonio Herrera passed away in 2023. He was a Veterinary Surgeon (MVZ) from the Xochimilco Campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). He obtained his Master's degree in Animal Reproduction Biology at the Iztapalapa Campus of the same institution, and later, his PhD in Biological Sciences also from UAM’s Iztapalapa Campus.

Throughout his professional career, Dr. Herrera distinguished himself as a veterinary surgeon, responsible for collections and private aviaries of ornamental and companion wildlife specimens authorized by SEMARNAT. He also managed a private clinic exclusively for ornamental and companion wild birds. He was Director of the marine mammal reproduction program at Dolphin Discovery and worked in natural and assisted reproduction in captive wildlife as a private consultant. In addition, Dr. Herrera ventured into Human Reproduction Biology at Monterrey Clinic.

In academia, his teaching work was recognized at various institutions. He taught classes on wild and biomedically relevant species in the MVZ undergraduate program at the Michoacan University. He was Senior Professor of the Bird Module and the Welfare and Wildlife Module in the MVZ undergraduate program at UAM Xochimilco Campus. He also participated as a professor in the Master's program in Animal Reproduction Biology at the Iztapalapa Campus and the Master's in Agricultural Sciences at UAM Xochimilco. He supervised numerous theses, including two undergraduate, twenty master’s, and three doctoral theses.

Dr. Herrera also left a legacy in research with over 20 publications in international journals, 72 presentations at national congresses, and the authorship of five teaching manuals. Among his distinctions are the University Merit Medal in both his master’s and doctoral studies from UAM, as well as recognition as a National Level 1 Researcher by the National System of Researchers (SNI) of CONACyT for the 2021-2023 period. Additionally, he was a member of the National Council for Veterinary Certification (CONCERVET) in wildlife and received the 2019 Teaching Award granted by the Division of Biological Sciences at the Xochimilco Campus.
