Profile
Dr. Emilio Sacristán is a renowned Mexican researcher, inventor, and entrepreneur in the field of medical technology. After an outstanding academic and scientific career, he retired from his role as a Research Professor in the Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Iztapalapa Campus, where he also founded and directed the National Research Center for Medical Instrumentation and Imaging (CI3M). He earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and completed a specialization in new product design, development, and management at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Throughout his career, he served as a professor and researcher at institutions such as Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1993–1995), the medical schools of the University of Massachusetts (1988–1995), Yale University (2001–2002), and Stanford University (2009). He has authored more than 90 scientific publications and holds 24 international patents.
Dr. Sacristán has worked closely with several international companies to develop and transfer new medical technologies. He has taken on roles as Founder, CEO, and/or Chief Scientific Officer at Enviva Corp. (1993–1995), Innovamédica (2000–2010), Critical Perfusion Inc. (2007–2010), Abdeo Medical (2008–2010), and more recently Nervive Inc. (since 2013). He invented several innovative medical devices, including the VITACOR UVAD artificial heart, the aspiration condenser for anesthesia gas monitoring, the gastric impedance spectrometer for intensive care, and the magnetic stimulator for stroke treatment, among others.
Throughout his professional career, he has earned numerous awards from organizations such as the Society for Technology in Anesthesia, the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering, the Regional Council of Biomedical Engineering for Latin America, and the Mexican Ministry of Economy. He has been an Endeavor Entrepreneur since 2004 and received the American Express Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2006. In 2017, he received the National Science Award in the field of technology, innovation, and design.
