Profile

Dr. Alfonso Espitia Cabrera was a professor in the field of environmental engineering at UAM, Azcapotzalco Campus, teaching both undergraduate and master’s level courses since 1981. He also served as a professor in the Master’s Program in Hygiene and Safety at the Institute of Occupational Safety of the State of Mexico.

His professional training included a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from UNAM, a Master’s degree in Hygiene and Industrial Safety from the School of Public Health of Mexico, complete coursework in the Master’s program in Environmental Engineering (UNAM), and a Ph.D. in Environment and Development from CIIEMAD/IPN.

Additionally, he obtained a specialization in Industrial Toxicology from the Environmental Health Centre in Canada and a specialization in Environmental Pollution Control from JICA in Japan. He was Expert No. 49 in Environmental Protection at the National College of Chemical Engineers and Chemists (CONIQQ) and worked as a Lead Environmental Auditor and Specialist Auditor in all areas established by PROFEPA, conducting over 50 environmental audits for various companies.

In the public sector, he worked at the Subsecretariat for Environmental Improvement of the Ministry of Health (SSA) and at the Subsecretariat of Ecology of SEDESOL. In the private sector, he collaborated with Celanese Mexicana S.A. as a Corporate Environmental Specialist and worked in ICA in the area of environmental protection, among other companies.

He led over 50 projects sponsored by UAM, Azcapotzalco Campus, for companies such as PEMEX, CFE, and HOLCIM APASCO, among others, in areas including:
• Remediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated soils,
• Environmental impact and risk assessments,
• Accident prevention programs,
• Occupational risk atlases,
• Water quality monitoring on offshore platforms,
• Continuous automatic air quality monitoring,
• Environmental audits, and
• Root cause analysis of accidents, among others.

He published in international journals on advanced oxidation and combustion and presented research at national and international conferences, including APCA, AWMA, IPC, IMIQ, and FEMISCA, among others. Additionally, he supervised over 40 undergraduate theses and three master’s theses.

In the field of international consulting, he developed the Hazardous Waste Regulation for the Republic of Ecuador. Furthermore, he was a member of various professional societies, including FEMISCA, APCA, AWMA, AICHE, and NACE, among others.
