Profile
In memoriam
Professor José Ricardo Gómez Romero completed his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. He later earned his Doctorate from Université Claude Bernard in France, followed by a postdoctoral stay at the Université de Montpellier, also in France.
He was recognized as an Emeritus Researcher by the National System of Researchers and held the titles of Distinguished Professor and Professor Emeritus at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), where he taught in the Department of Chemistry at the Iztapalapa campus.
His outstanding academic and scientific career focused on heterogeneous catalysis, particularly applied to petroleum refining and petrochemical processes. In recent years, his research turned toward the development of photocatalytic materials for the photochemical removal of pollutants and hydrogen production.
Throughout his career, he served as a researcher at the Mexican Petroleum Institute, an academic advisor at UAM, a visiting researcher at the University of Montpellier, President of the Ibero-American Society of Catalysis, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Office of the President of Mexico. He also held leadership roles as Head of the Catalysis Area and of the Department of Chemistry at UAM Iztapalapa and participated actively in evaluation processes for PNPC and CIEES.
He published nearly 320 scientific articles in peer-reviewed international journals, and his work was cited over 8,700 times. He was the author of six patents and supervised ten doctoral theses, 25 master’s theses, and seven undergraduate theses with dedication and rigor.
Professor Gómez Romero received numerous national and international honors, including the Scopus Award, the National Prize for Sciences and Arts in the field of Technology and Design, and the Andrés Manuel del Río National Chemistry Award. His academic and personal legacy was further acknowledged through the distinctions of Distinguished Professor and Professor Emeritus by UAM, as well as the title of Emeritus Researcher by the National System of Researchers.
