Profile

Dr. María Elvira Buelna Serrano’s research focused on understanding the development of judicial institutions and how specific groups exercised power through them.

She began with her research on the inquisitorial system during the viceregal period (1524-1810). Since the 1990s, she was interested in studying this system's impact on the current judicial system. Due to this interest, she participated in the book Structural Reforms Related to the Judicial System. Also, from the same interest, she saw the impact of democratic institutions and the search by groups of power to establish authoritarian institutions as of 2001, specifically regarding the event of 9/11, which marked a turning point in the historical timeline of humanity.

Her primary lines of research included judicial institutions, political institutions conducive to human equality, the institutionalization of authoritarian systems as opposed to democracy, sustainable development, and the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals.
