Dr. María Josefa Erreguerena Albaitero pursued graduate studies in sociology at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO). She earned her Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Xochimilco Campus, where she served as a professor and researcher in the Department of Education and Communication.
As a faculty member, she taught several modules in the Bachelor's Program in Social Communication, focusing on the analysis of audiovisual language, transmedia storytelling, and social media. She contributed to the theoretical components of the modules "Cinematography and Cultural Processes" (Module 8) and "Television and Cultural Processes" (Module 9). She also led the theoretical phase of the concentration area "The Social Imaginary in Audiovisual Language", where she supervised numerous undergraduate thesis projects.
In her research work, she led several projects approved by the Divisional Council, including The Social Imaginary: Hypermedia and Social Networks. Case Study: American TV Series as Hypertelevision.
She authored several books, including:
• The Vampire Myth: Specificity, Origins, and Evolution in Film (UAM and Plaza y Valdés, 2002)
• Superheroes: The Modern Struggle Between Good and Evil (Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Mexico, 2006)
• Media as Myth Reactivators: Evil in Film as an Example of the Imaginary Construction of Myth (2nd revised and expanded edition, UAM – Xochimilco Campus, Division of Social Sciences and Humanities, 2007)
• Resistance to the Future: Dystopias in Hollywood Cinema (UAM – Xochimilco Campus, Division of Social Sciences and Humanities, 2011, Mexico)
She has published in various national and international academic journals.
