Profile

Dr. Rubén José Dorantes Rodríguez, originally from Mexico City, studied Physics at the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). In 1987, he completed an advanced diploma in Energy Studies at the University of Nice, France, and in 1992, he earned a Ph.D. in Energy and Heat Transfer from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) in Lyon.

Starting in 1979, he served as a full-time professor in the Department of Energy at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Azcapotzalco Campus. Throughout his teaching career, he taught courses in Thermofluids and Energy Conversion Processes and directed the Laboratory of Refrigeration and Renewable Energy, where he led numerous research and innovation projects.

He published more than 170 academic works in national and international journals and conferences. He advised 43 undergraduate theses at UAM Azcapotzalco Campus, and eight theses in Colombia (six master’s and one doctoral).

Dr. Dorantes also held several key academic and administrative positions. He coordinated UAM Azcapotzalco’s Energy Saving Program from 1992 to 1996, served as Head of the Department of Energy from 1998 to 2002, and led the Physics Engineering program from 2008 to 2012. From 2000 to 2002, he served as President of the National Solar Energy Association and organized three national solar energy conferences between 1999 and 2002.

He developed methodologies and projects for designing large-scale solar heating systems for swimming pools, wind-electric systems, and energy audits of various scopes. He also carried out research and technological development on medium-temperature solar systems for refrigeration and industrial heat processes in collaboration with companies and research centers in Mexico and Colombia. Since 2014, he focused on developing selective solar surfaces for low- and medium-temperature solar heaters, as well as solar ovens and stoves for cooking, water purification, and seawater desalination.

He led collaborative projects with companies such as Bimbo and Cormet and provided technical services to institutions including CINVESTAV, IER-UNAM, UAM Azcapotzalco Campus, and the Center for the Arts of San Luis Potosí. In 2020, he completed the technical coordination of project 249855, funded by the CONACYT-SENER Energy Sustainability Fund, which involved UAM Azcapotzalco Campus, CIMAV Chihuahua, and the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira in Colombia.

In 1993, representing UAM, he received the National Electric Energy Saving Award granted by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
