Profile
Dr. María Verónica Vázquez Mantecón
Dr. María Verónica Vázquez Mantecón was born in Mexico City in 1955. She pursued her professional education at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Latin American Studies, as well as her Ph.D. in the History of Mexico.
She began her academic career at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in 1978, teaching in the Bachelor’s program in Sociology at the Azcapotzalco campus, where she offered courses on Latin America and the History of Mexico. In 1982, she joined the Xochimilco campus in the Department of Politics and Culture, where she taught modules such as Mexico, Economy, Politics and Society, Knowledge and Society, among others, in the Bachelor’s program in Politics and Social Management.
Over her 45 years of service at UAM, she developed various research projects, including studies on the textile anarchists of San Ángel in the 1920s, the figure of José Vasconcelos and education in Mexico, as well as studies on sugar haciendas in New Spain and education in 20th-century Peru. A notable project was "Lázaro Cárdenas in the Social Imagination," which resulted in several articles and the book The Myth of Cárdenas.
Always interested in the cultural consumption of the masses, Dr. Vázquez Mantecón focused on investigating mass culture through qualitative techniques, aiming to understand, from the perspective of the masses themselves, their preferences and consumption habits. These studies resulted in several articles available online.
Ultimately, her greatest professional satisfaction has always been teaching. Dr. Vázquez Mantecón considers that what she has received from her students has been fundamental to her academic and personal development.
