Professor Sergio Elías Uribe Sierra holds a PhD and a Master's degree in Rural Development from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Xochimilco Campus. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Economics from the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas.
He is a member of the National System of Researchers with the appointment of National Research Candidate.
He has participated in several national and international academic events presenting research advances in extractivism and socio-environmental conflicts, mining and socio-demographic transformations and rural depopulation. She has several publications in specialized international journals on these topics.
He was awarded research projects for postdoctoral studies at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, first sponsored internally by the PUCV and later by the National Research and Development Agenda, where he researches on the relationship between the impacts of open-pit mining and the dynamics of rural depopulation latent in Chile.
