Profile

Dr. Sergio Elías Uribe Sierra holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Xochimilco and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (UAZ).

He has participated in various national and international academic events, presenting research findings on extractivism and socio-environmental conflicts, with a primary focus on the political ecology of mining and rural depopulation processes. He has also published in specialized international journals within these fields of knowledge.

He has conducted postdoctoral research projects at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV), funded by the institution and by Chile's Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo (ANID), in which he examined the relationship between the impacts of open-pit mining and the dynamics of latent rural depopulation in that country.

He is a member of the "Estudios Críticos del Desarrollo Rural" Working Group of the Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales (CLACSO) and of the Food, Agriculture, and Rural Studies (FARS) section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA). He also collaborates with the Observatorio de Conflictos Mineros de América Latina (OCMAL).
