Profile

Mariana Salcedo Gómez holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Science from UNAM, with an undergraduate degree in Social Anthropology from the National School of Anthropology and History. She is SNII Candidate Level. Currently, she is profressor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, teaching in the Humanities undergraduate program, and is undertaking a research fellowship in mental health supported by CONAHCyT at UNAM.

Her teaching experience also includes positions at the Faculty of Psychology at UNAM, the Graduate Program in Cognitive Sciences at the Center for Research in Cognitive Sciences at the Autonomous University of Morelos, in the disciplinary area of Anthropology and Cognition, and in the Graduate Program in Philosophy of Science at UNAM.

The central theme of her academic career has been psychiatry as a medical discipline, its classification strategies, causal assumptions, and the ontological premises surrounding the psychiatric categories it proposes.

Since 2019, she has been part of the Permanent Seminar on Cognitive Science at the Institute of Philosophical Research, UNAM, and in 2024 she will join the Philosophy of Biology Seminar (PhiBio) coordinated by researchers from UAM, Cuajimalpa Campus.

Some of her recent publications in the field of the philosophy of psychiatry include: "Functional Systems as Explanatory Tools in the Context of Psychiatry," in Philosophical Explorations: An International Journal for the Philosophy of Mind and Action, co-authored with Claudia Lorena García; "The Privileged Status of Mechanistic Explanations in the Sciences: The Case of Psychiatry"; "Limitations of the Objective Criterion of Biological Dysfunction in the Definition of Mental Illness"; "The Failure of Diagnostic Validity and the Clinical-Pathological Model of Disease," among others.
