Profile

Professor Sonia Ingrid Hidalgo Yong began her studies at the Faculty of Architecture of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) to later enter the Industrial Design degree at the Industrial Design Research Center (CIDI) at the same Faculty.

Once at CIDI, and from his first contact with the laboratories and workshops, he began to acquire knowledge in terms of production processes, techniques, and materials. In 2002, she did her social service in the Molding Laboratory of the Center, a workshop created that same year, where she expanded and improved her knowledge and skills to work with a wider range of materials. At the end of that period, she was invited to participate as a teacher in the same workshop, teaching Materials I and II, a task she has carried out to date, having seventeen years of experience.

Seeking to expand her knowledge of materials and processes related to the subject she teaches, she manages to make contacts with different companies in which she develops projects with different materials that can be applied both in the classroom and in independent projects.

At the same time, she works in various design and architecture firms, where she develops projects ranging from graphic design, street furniture and signage, the design of medical equipment and production of high and low production molds, in addition to participating in the design and development of artistic pieces in different materials.

Since 2013, she began to work independently, she carries out projects, collaborations, and special interventions with Mexican designers, artisans and artists. Her restlessness and taste for experimentation, has led her to seek different ways to apply production processes, which are often only used industrially, to achieve objects and pieces with added value that express the feelings that artists seek to convey.

In October 2017, she won second place in the Mexican Biennial of Design, with the project Auto-Injector Pen, in the category of Professional: Design for Development and Technological Novelty, a project developed in an interdisciplinary team of Industrial Designers and Engineers from UNAM.

She entered as an Academic Technician at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), Xochimilco Campus, in December 2019, to continue her academic work. She teaches the courses of Technological and Instrumental Workshop of Models to students of IV Trimester and Technological and Instrumental Workshop of Plastics for IX Trimester.

She is currently developing special projects independently and continues with her teaching work at the UAM and UNAM.
