Profile

Professor Jorge Martínez Contreras has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Paris IV- Sorbonne. Since 1974, he has been a professor at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) and has been a professor at Mexican public universities (UAEM: 1971-73, BUAP: 1973-74) for more than 50 years. At the UAM he has been founding Academic Secretary at the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities of the UAM Campus Iztapalapa. He has been a founder of UAM as the first Academic Secretary in the DCSH of UAM Iztapalapa Campus.

At the UAM, he has been Director of the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities of the UAM Iztapalapa Campus, Secretary and Rector of the UAM Iztapalapa Campus. He received the Academic Palms awarded by the French government. Member of the Academy of Sciences of Mexico. Former president of the following associations: Mexican Philosophy Association; Mexican Association of Primatology. Member of the Ibero-American network of philosophy of biology. Distinguished Professor of the UAM in the Department of Philosophy. Specialist in the phenomenology of existence and cultural evolution. Member of the Area of Logic and Philosophy of Science of the UAM Iztapalapa Campus. Author or coordinator of more than twenty books and more than 110 works, the majority as an individual author.

He has presented papers at more than 200 congresses and scientific meetings and has given more than 130 keynote conferences. We highlight his book: Sartre. The Philosophy of Man and Buffon’s Primates [trilingual edition: Esp., Fr. & Eng.] (both in Siglo XXI Editores). He has won and coordinated three research projects at Conacyt, in which groups of young researchers have been formed in the Darwin Center for Evolutionary Thought that he directs. He has been a visiting professor (on sabbaticals) and thesis supervisor at various universities in Mexico, France, and Spain.

The scientific work of his group is disseminated through his website and Facebook. It promotes a unique project in Mexico around cultural evolution, the study of culture in non-human animals and humans of cultural, social, and historical phenomena, as well as how these are impacted by evolutionary processes.
