Profile

Dr. José Roberto Vazquez Avendaño holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Zaragoza at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM, 2012), a Master's degree in Animal Reproductive Biology (2016), and a Ph.D. in Biological and Health Sciences (2024) from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Iztapalapa. His academic excellence earned him the University Merit Medal for both his Master's and doctoral degrees. In 2023, he was selected to participate in the international course "Latest Advances in Genome Editing and ART Techniques in Laboratory Mice" at the Institut Pasteur in Montevideo, Uruguay. He holds Level I status in Mexico's National System of Researchers (SNII).

His research focuses on optimizing the efficiency of in vitro mammalian embryo production using in vitro fertilization (IVF) and Handmade Cloning (HMC) techniques across livestock species (sheep and cattle), companion animals (cats), and wildlife species such as the bighorn sheep. As a result of this research and in collaboration with his research team, he secured a patent granted to the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in 2022 for the preservation of bighorn sheep through embryo cloning. He has published research articles, science communication pieces, and book chapters, alongside presenting at national and international scientific conferences and delivering keynote lectures, workshops, and courses on reproductive biotechnologies.

In teaching and student mentorship, he instructs courses in the Animal Production undergraduate program and supervises capstone and social service projects in Animal Production, Biology, and Experimental Biology at UAM Iztapalapa. Additionally, he serves as an advisor in the Master's Program in Animal Reproductive Biology at UAM and is a listed tutor in the Graduate Program in Animal Production and Health Sciences at UNAM.
