Profile

Dr. Mayra Nieves Guevara is a Sociologist with a Master’s and Ph.D. in Rural Development from the Xochimilco Campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). She serves as an Associate Professor–Researcher (Level D) in the Department of Social Relations, within the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities at the same campus.

Her teaching activities include courses in the Interdivisional Core Curriculum, the Divisional Core Curriculum, and the Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. She is also a member of the core academic faculty of the Graduate Program in Rural Development—at both the master’s and doctoral levels—and of the Master’s Program in Sustainable Societies within the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities.

In the field of professional and community engagement, Dr. Nieves Guevara has participated in the development of Municipal Development Plans, Land-Use Planning Programs, and Natural Resource Management Plans, particularly in the Atenco–Texcoco region. In this area, she has provided technical advising and community outreach, promoting the preservation of natural assets and the construction of local sustainability processes.

She is a member of the Mexican Association of Rural Studies (AMER) and the Working Group on Critical Studies of Rural Development of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO).

Her main research interests include socio-environmental conflicts and community defense of territory, environmental crisis and community practices of sustainability, urban growth and socio-territorial transformations, as well as social movements, community resistance, identity, organization, and rural development.
