Profile

Dr. Gloria Soto holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia, UK; a Masters’ degree in International Relations from the University of Essex, UK, and a bachelor degree in International Relations, Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City. She is an honorary research fellow at the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE), United Kingdom (http://cserge.ac.uk/people).

She is a member of Causa Natura Advisory Council (http://causanatura.org/). She was Citizen and Government Counsellor of the Mexico City’s Environmental and Land Use Ombudsman (April 2008 to April 2011) and was distinguished as an honorary member of the Mexican Academy of Professionals in Socioeconomic Project Evaluation, A. C (http: //www.ampres.com.mx/index.html).

Her research is on water resources management and environmental economics. She has developed research on water tariffs and subsidies for domestic use, restoration value of contaminated water bodies, reduction of risks associated with floods and droughts, and climate change impacts and governance.

She has coordinated studies for the National Institute of Climate Change on sub-national climate change policy; the National Water Commission about water demand in cities; the Government of Puebla and the National Water Commission about the estimation of social benefits of ecological restoration of the Alto Atoyac basin; the Mexico City’s Environmental and Land Use Ombudsman about individual and collective water rights; the Chamber of Deputies about environmental and water indicators at the national level, and the Virtual Center for Climate Change in Mexico City about impacts of climate change on water management in the Federal District.
