Profile

Academic Background
Dr. Gerardo Odriozola was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on January 8, 1974. He completed his undergraduate studies in Chemical Engineering at the University of the Republic (Uruguay), where he joined the Chair of Physics in the Faculty of Chemistry as a teaching assistant. He earned his Ph.D. in Physical Sciences from the University of Granada (Spain) in 2001, graduating with the highest distinction (Excellent Cum Laude). His doctoral dissertation received the Extraordinary Doctoral Award from the University of Granada.

Academic and Professional Career
After completing his Ph.D., he served as Adjunct Professor in the Chair of Physics at the University of the Republic. In 2002, he joined the Molecular Engineering Program at the Mexican Institute of Petroleum (IMP), where he conducted research on molecular simulation of swelling clays. Since April 2015, he has been a Full Professor (Titular “C”) in the Area of Physics of Irreversible Processes at the Azcapotzalco Campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), where he teaches Physics and Thermodynamics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Since 2024, he has also served as Coordinator of the Master’s Program in Materials Science and Engineering at the same institution.

Disciplinary Area and Research Lines
His research is situated in statistical physics and soft condensed matter, with emphasis on molecular simulation and theoretical modeling of complex systems. He has made significant contributions to the adaptation of the replica-exchange Monte Carlo method for the study of hard systems, the analysis of entropic mechanisms in nanometric cavities, studies on Hofmeister effects, the formation of extremely low-density liquids (empty liquids), and the design of models for thermosensitive polymers.

Scientific Output and Metrics
He is the author of more than 90 peer-reviewed articles published in international scientific journals. His work has accumulated over 1,500 citations and he has an h-index of 21.

Supervision and Academic Mentorship
He has successfully supervised doctoral and graduate theses at institutions such as the Mexican Institute of Petroleum, UAM, and the University of Granada, contributing to the training of new researchers in physics and computational methods.

Honors and Distinctions
In 2024, he received the Teaching Excellence Award from the Azcapotzalco Campus of UAM in recognition of his educational contributions. In 2017, he was awarded the Marcos Moshinsky Chair. He is a Level III member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNII).
