Profile

Doctor Silvestre Alavez is a Professor and Dean of the Biological and Health Sciences Division at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Lerma Campus. Professor Alavez obtained a degree in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where his area of expertise was Neurochemistry, and a very solid training and experience in aging research at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in Novato, California. His work has been published in the most prestigious journals such as Nature, Cell Metabolism, and Aging Cell, and he is a member of the National System of Researchers at Level II.

Using the earthworm C. elegans as an experimental model, the objectives of his research are (i) to understand the role of protein homeostasis in aging (ii) the systematic identification of compounds with the potential to become pharmacological interventions to extend life expectancy and promote healthy aging in humans and (iii) to understand the epidemiological basis of aging and disease in the Mexican population.
