Profile
Dr. Ramón Andrés López Pérez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) (1996), a Master’s degree in Coastal Oceanography from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) (1998), and a Ph.D. in Geosciences from the University of Iowa (2005). Since March 2013, he has served as a Full-Time Professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM).
Dr. López Pérez’s research focuses on the study of coral reefs, integrating aspects of their evolution, ecology, biodiversity, distribution, and conservation. He has been the principal investigator (PI) of several research projects funded by the Geological Society of America, CONABIO, and CONACYT, addressing topics such as reef evolution, biodiversity associated with coral ecosystems, coral reef ecology and distribution, and ocean acidification. He has also served as a co-principal investigator in numerous interdisciplinary projects related to marine biology and coastal ecosystem management.
Throughout his career, Dr. López Pérez has built an extensive academic record, with over 140 scientific publications, including research articles, books, book chapters, and science outreach papers in specialized journals and popular media. His work has significantly advanced understanding of coral reef distribution and ecology, marine biodiversity, species description, population genetics, and reef evolution, while contributing to management and conservation strategies for marine ecosystems.
Deeply committed to academic training and mentoring, he has supervised numerous undergraduate and graduate theses and guided students from various universities and research institutions across Mexico, fostering an interdisciplinary and sustainable approach to the study of marine ecosystems.
