Profile

Professor Beatriz Gómez González studied for her Ph.D. in Psychology, in the Field of Behavioral Neurosciences at the Faculty of Psychology of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM (2005-2009). Her thesis was entitled "Effect of prenatal or postnatal stress on the development of the blood-brain barrier in the rat (Rattus norvegicus)". Tutor: Dr. Alfonso Escobar. Graduated in Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology, UNAM (2000-2003) with the thesis "Brain dysgenesis and behavioral deficits in an experimental animal model of stress". (Honorable Mention). Tutor: Dr. Alfonso Escobar.

She is the author of 21 articles published in indexed journals of international circulation, author of two international book chapters, and editor of a specialized volume of a journal of global circulation. Dr. Gómez has an h-index of nine and more than 300 citations to her published works. She has contributed to the formation of high-level human resources, and has trained three doctoral level students, five master's level students, and five bachelor's level students. Every year Dr. Gómez participates in the Organizing Committee of the International Brain Week at the Iztapalapa Campus and participates with a stand in the Science Fair of the same institution. Dr. Gómez's research projects have allowed her to understand the mechanisms of sleep regulation on the functioning of biological barriers, with particular emphasis on neuroimmunoendocrine interactions.

Her research topics include the following: Neuroimmunoendocrine consequences of sleep loss; Regulation of the blood-brain barrier dependent on the wake/sleep cycle; and Regulation of the blood-testicular barrier dependent on the wake/sleep cycle.

Methodologies:
1 - Isolation of cerebral microvasculature.
2 - Techniques to evaluate the permeability of the blood-brain barrier to circulating molecules in the blood.
3 - Surgery to implant electrodes to record EEG and EMG activity in rats.
4 - Polysomnographic recording in experimental animals.
5 - Tissue processing for transmission electron microscopy.
6 - Obtaining and quantitative analysis of images obtained with transmission electron microscopy.
7 - Western blotting.
8 - Experimental microsurgery for endocrine gland removal.
9 - Immunohistochemistry.
10 - Classical histological techniques to study the nervous system.
11 - Behavioral tests in experimental animals.
