Profile

Professor Juan Francisco Palacios Espinosa received his B.S. degree in Pharmaceutical Biological Chemistry from the School of Chemistry of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). At the same institution, he obtained his Master's and Doctorate degrees in Chemical Sciences. The first one was at the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM, under the tutelage of Dr. Irma Romero Alvarez, where he worked on a project aimed at isolating and identifying bioactive compounds from medicinal plants useful for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori bacteria. The second stay was at the Department of Biological Systems at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Xochimilco Campus, where he is currently an Associate Professor.

His production includes seven research articles, a popularization article, a laboratory practice manual, and a textbook on Nomenclature of Polyfunctional Organic Compounds.

He has supervised undergraduate theses, social service students, and he is a tutor in the Master's Programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences and in Agricultural Sciences. He has presented several papers in national and international forums such as the Natural Products Research Meetings of the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP), Phytochemical Society of North America, the Chemical Society of Mexico, and the Mexican Academy of Organic Chemistry.

His lines of research consist of: a) Chemical and pharmacological study of medicinal plant species widely used in our country, b) Synthesis, structural modification and evaluation of bioactive substances and c) Pharmacological and toxicological study of molecules with biological activity.
