Profile

Professor Alberto Ortega Vázquez is a Pharmaceutical Chemist Biologist (QFB) who graduated from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), Xochimilco Campus, as well as Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Doctor in Biological and Health Sciences obtained at this university. She has a Master's Degree in Clinical Research and Pharmacogenetics obtained at the University of Extremadura (UEx). Badajoz, Spain.

Currently, an Associate Professor and Researcher of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory of the Department of Biological Systems (DSB) of the Division of Biological and Health Sciences at the Xochimilco Campus of the UAM, he has been recognized as a Member of the National System of Researchers, Level I since 2016.

He develops scientific research in Genomics of neurodegenerative diseases, molecular genetics in hereditary diseases, population genetics, pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine and, genetic markers of aging. He has 21 scientific articles in indexed journals.

His first research was in the area of neurosciences at the Manuel Velasco Suárez National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (INNNNMVS) and, later, he did his postgraduate studies and scientific research in pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine and population genetics, He has published 20 scientific articles including pharmacogenomic studies on antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) phenytoin and lamotrigine published in "The Pharmacogenomic Journal" subsidiary of the scientific journal Nature and in population genetics is the publication "Allele and genotype frequencies of genes relevant to anti-epileptic drug therapy in Mexican-Mestizo healthy volunteers" which provides knowledge of the allele frequencies of genetic variants associated with metabolism, transport, and receptors of AEDs in Mexican mestizos.

He did a research stay at the Centro de Investigación Clínica del Área de Badajoz (CICAB) of the Hospital Universitario Infanta Cristina of the UEx in Badajoz, Spain. She is also a member of the Iberoamerican Network of Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics (SIFF-RIBEF; www.ribef.com) and the CEIBA Consortium for the pharmacogenetic study of Iberoamerican populations in the group of Mexico, to date ten international scientific articles have been published in this consortium.

He has participated in different institutional research projects in collaboration with CONACyT, INNNMVS, CICAB, Hospital General de México Dr. Eduardo Liceaga, Universidad de Guadalajara (CUCiénega-UdeG), among others. He has been a member of the Mexican Association of Human Genetics, A.C. since 2011. Likewise, he has obtained 20 awards in scientific research granted by different institutions, among them the 1st Place in Research at the Annual Meeting of the INNNMVS on two occasions.

He has been the coordinator of the annual theoretical-practical course of Selected Topics in Human Genetics since 2015 contributing with the update in human genetics for students and professors of the Xochimilco Campus of the UAM. Currently, Dr. Ortega is the Head of the Biological Products Research Area of the DSB and has been thesis tutor of QFB students at UNAM and jury in different professional and degree exams related to his area of research and is advisor to students of Social Service of QFB and of the Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Xochimilco Campus of UAM.
