Profile
Professor Fernando Rodríguez Ramos studied a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biology at the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Zaragoza of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where he graduated with a thesis entitled: "Estudio químico de los alcaloides presentes en las semillas de Bocconia arborea" at the UNAM. He is currently a member of the National System of Researchers, Level I. He studied the Master's in Chemical Sciences at the Institute of Chemistry of the UNAM, with the research project entitled: "Structural characterization of alkaloids from Bocconia arborea and sesquiterpenes from Perezia sp. Structure of a new cycloadduct derived from Perezona", and later the Doctorate in Chemical Sciences at the Graduate Unit of the Faculty of Chemistry of the UNAM, where he graduated with honorable mention, and proposed as a candidate for the Alfonso Caso medal with the thesis entitled: "Isolation of the bronchorelaxant active principles of Gnaphallium liebmannii".
During the years 2011 to 2013, he did a postdoctoral stay at the Multidisciplinary Research Unit of the FES Zaragoza of the UNAM where he achieved the synthesis of more than 20 chromones, some with good vasodilator effects, and evaluated their pharmacological mechanism of action as inhibitors of phosphodiesterases, laying the groundwork for the development of chromones as vasodilator drugs that could be used for the treatment of hypertension (HT).
His work in different areas of the chemical-biological sciences has allowed him to develop research work in Chemistry of Natural Products (isolation and structural characterization of secondary metabolites of medicinal plants), Organic Synthesis, Analytical Chemistry (Development of analytical methods for quantification of natural products), Pharmacological Evaluation of Natural and Synthetic Products, which has allowed him to develop in the line of Medicinal Chemistry focused on contributing to the search for new molecules to treat health problems accentuated in Mexico, especially Asthma and Arterial Hypertension.
Professor Rodríguez Ramos teaches the modules "Obtaining Organic Compounds of Pharmaceutical Interest" and "Reactivity of Organic Compounds" in the undergraduate program of Biological Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Xochimilco Campus and has taught at the undergraduate level in the area of "Pharmacology" at the Faculty of Chemistry of the UNAM; in the area of "Synthesis of Drugs and Raw Materials II" at the FES Zaragoza of the UNAM; and in the area of Physicomathematics at the UAM Cuajimalpa Campus. He has also taught courses in the postgraduate program in Molecular Biomedicine Sciences, National School of Medicine and Homeopathy of the National Polytechnic Institute, in the areas of "Methods of Pharmacological Evaluation in Smooth Muscle" and "Drug Interaction".
Professor Rodríguez Ramos has published his research works in international refereed journals such as: Journal of Natural Products, Planta Medica, Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Journal of AOAC International, Bioorganic Chemistry, Journal of Mexican Chemical Society, and Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, as well as works in national journals such as Revista de la Sociedad Química de México and Boletín de la Sociedad Química de México.
