Profile

Professor Javiera Cervini Silva did research work as an undergraduate student mainly in the Department of Polymers of the Materials Research Institute and the General Direction of Academic Supercomputing (1992, 1994-1995), in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM, Ciudad Universitaria, 1993) and in the Area of Chemical Risks of the National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED, 1994-1995). Professor Cervini Silva obtained her B.S. degree in Chemistry from the Faculty of Chemistry of UNAM (1995) and her M.S. (1997) and Ph.D. (1999) degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Subsequently, Professor Cervini completed two postdoctoral fellowships, specializing in Environmental Geochemistry at the Earth Sciences Division of the Orland Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy (U.S.DOE LBNL) under the supervision of Professor Garrison Sposito (2000-2002) and in Geomicrobiology at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences of the University of California at Berkeley under the supervision of Professor Jillian Banfield (2003). Professor Cervini worked as a researcher at the Planetary Science Center of the Department of Astronomy at the University of California at Berkeley where she served as Deputy Director of the NASA Astrobiology Institute Biomars project (2003-2005). Professor Cervini joined the Institute of Geography at UNAM in Ciudad Universitaria as a Senior Researcher A (2006-2009). Subsequently, Dr. Cervini joined the Department of Processes and Technology at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Cuajimalpa Campus as a Professor (visiting 2009 and permanent 2010). Dr. Cervini has been recognized with Honorable Mention (for average and thesis work, Faculty of Chemistry, UNAM-CU, 1995), CONACYT Scholarship for studies abroad (1995-1999), Scholarships General Directorate for Academic Staff Support (DGAPA-UNAM, 1993, 1995-1997, 2007-2009), Student Award (1999, American Clay Society, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana), IBM Distinguished Lecture (University of Notre Dame, 2002), Distinguished Lecture (University of Wyoming, 2003), Bradley Award (2005, International Society for the Study of Clays, Tokyo, Japan; Awarded every four years to people under 35 years old, first woman and first Latin American), CONACYT Repatriation Grant (2005), Entry to the National System of Researchers as National Researcher Level 1 (Area 1, Physics-Mathematics and Earth Sciences, 2007), Entry as Regular Member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2007), Mexico-United States Foundation for Science and Mexican Academy of Sciences Summer Scholarship 2009 (Venue: Nanogeosciences Laboratory, Division of Earth Sciences, U. S. DOE LBNL), Distinguished Visiting Professor (Joseph Fourier University and Laboratory of Internal Geophysics and Technophysics-Grenoble Earth Sciences Observatory, LGIT-OSUG, 2009), Elected Member of the Executive Council of the American Clay Society (2018-2021), National Researcher Level III (top 7%, Area 1).

Professor Cervini has participated as coordinator in the books "Carbon Stabilization by Clays in the Environment: Processes and Characterization Methods" (2009), The Clay Minerals Society Workshop Series, Vol. 16, 135 pp, The Clay Minerals Society, Washington and Molecular Geomicrobiology. (2005). J.F. Banfield, J. Cervini-Silva, and K. Nealson, Editors. Nealson, Editors. Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry Vol. 59. Mineralogical Society of America. Washington, D.C. 294 pp. Dr. Cervini has participated in the organization of international scientific congresses as session chair, and/or part of the Scientific Committee, as well as in the organization of international thematic workshops. Dr. Cervini has been a member of the Continuing Education Committee of the NASA Astrobiology Institute (2003-2005) and Chair of the Continuing Education Committee of the American Clay Society (2004-2007).
