Profile
Professor Liliana Schifter Aceves has a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in 2002 and a Ph.D. in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain in 2006.
Most of her professional life has been spent at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Xochimilco Campus as part of the Department of Biological Systems, where she is currently a full-time Professor. As part of her teaching duties, Dr. Schifter assists students in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry program and the Master's and Doctoral programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Her institutional development and daily teaching, research, dissemination, and liaison have revolved around the History of the chemical and pharmaceutical sciences in Mexico, a field of knowledge very little attended by historians.
She is currently responsible for the project Critical Review of the Historical Development of the Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and Biological Sciences. This project is unique in its kind in the Department; its interdisciplinary nature allows it to address complex research topics related to science and technology from a historical and social perspective. The general objectives of the research line to which it belongs seek to outline the general features of an integral and panoramic vision of the development of the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biological sciences, including their professionalization, institutionalization, and industrialization processes. The results of these works include several books, book chapters, articles, and graduate and postgraduate theses, as well as several participations in national and international courses and congresses, and have earned Dr. Schifter the recognition of belonging to the National System of Researchers.
At present, thanks to the efforts of the other colleagues who are part of the project, those interested in the study of the History of the chemical and pharmaceutical sciences already have an academic infrastructure where they can carry out undergraduate and graduate theses on the topics in question. The line of research in History is available for students of the Master's and Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences of the UAM Xochimilco Campus, which represents an outstanding achievement since there are very few graduate programs at the national level that offer subjects related to the History of science outside the Faculties of Social Sciences.
Among her publications is the book of her authorship "Espíritu e identidad farmacéuticos. La construcción de la Farmacopea mexicana (1846-2011)". The work addresses four fundamental points: the evolution of pharmaceutical practice from Classical Antiquity to its recognition as a scientific profession; the historical development of the leading European and American pharmacopeias; the transformation of the Mexican Pharmacopoeia throughout its multiple editions; and finally, the comparison of the importance given to medicinal plants within contemporary pharmacopeias. The work also analyzes the main social actors involved in this historical process and the role played by some characters in the first editions of the text.
In general, the scientific work generated for more than twenty years by the research group to which Dr. Schifter belongs represents a contribution to knowledge that has been recognized nationally and internationally. During these years, the group has consolidated an original line of research on the historical development of the chemical and pharmaceutical sciences in Mexico, which had yet to be attended. Over time, the research has contributed significantly to the localization of documentary sources, to establish methodological guidelines, and to structure a general panorama of the History of these disciplines from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
