Profile
Dr. Margarita Mercedes González Brambila holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Biochemical Engineering from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Iztapalapa Campus; a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM); and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Iztapalapa Campus, where she also completed a postdoctoral research stay.
Professionally, she worked for two years as a Project Engineer at Fertilizantes Mexicanos and subsequently served for five years as a researcher at the Mexican Institute of Petroleum. Since 2008, she has been a Research Professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Azcapotzalco Campus.
At UAM, she was a founding member of the Graduate Program in Process Engineering Student Committee and currently serves on it. She was a member and later Head of the Process Analysis Research Area (2012–2014), during which the Area received the Research Areas Award from the Division of Basic Sciences and Engineering at the Azcapotzalco Campus. She has also participated in various evaluation committees and contributed to the Institutional Sustainability Plan of the Azcapotzalco Campus. From 2014 to 2018, she served as Head of the Department of Energy within the Division of Basic Sciences and Engineering.
She is co-author of approximately 35 scientific articles published in high-impact journals and has presented 90 papers at national and international conferences. She has authored and co-authored books and book chapters, including a Process Engineering textbook published in Latin America by LIMUSA Wiley and a book on Biofilm Reactors published by PUBLICIA.
Her research focuses on biotechnology applied to environmental, energy, and industrial processes. She has supervised 40 undergraduate capstone projects and 13 graduate theses. She has served as principal investigator of a PROMEP-funded project (MXN $450,000), three internal UAM projects, and as UAM’s lead investigator for a SENER-CONACYT project with approximately MXN $7,200,000 allocated to the campus. She has also coordinated and collaborated on several additional research projects.
She is a Level II member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNII) and has held the PROMEP Desirable Profile recognition since 2009. In 2016, she received the UAM Research Award. She served on the Academic Committee of the Chemical Engineering undergraduate program (2010–2011) and was a member of the Engineering Evaluation Committee of UAM (2021–2023).
Since January 2023, she has served as Coordinator of the UAM Energy and Environment Network. She is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Energy: Science, Technology, and Management. She was Founder and President (2015–2019) of the Mexican Academy of Energy, A.C., and is currently an honorary member. She also served as General Coordinator of the International Energy Congresses in 2015, 2017, and 2019.
Since 2020, she has been a member of the Mexico City Climate Action initiative, sponsored by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Since 2019, she has participated in the ECOs Networks (biodiesel, women in engineering, and bioplastics) of the Mexico City Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation. Since 2021, she has been an active member of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Mexico), sponsored by the United Nations.
