Profile
Dr. Eva Alcántara Zavala holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences and a Master’s degree in Women’s Studies from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Xochimilco, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). She has completed postgraduate diploma programs in Contemporary Thought (17, Instituto de Estudios Críticos), Psychoanalysis (UAM Xochimilco), and Bioethics (UNAM). She holds the rank of National Researcher Level II in the Sistema Nacional de Investigadoras e Investigadores (SNII / SECIHTI).
She serves as a Full-Time Professor (Level C) in the Department of Education and Communication within the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Xochimilco. In graduate education and academic administration, she serves as Coordinator of the Master’s Program in Women’s Studies and is a faculty member of both the Master’s Program in Women’s Studies and the Doctoral Program in Feminist Studies.
Her research integrates theoretical, methodological, and clinical perspectives to examine the intersections of sexuation, subject formation, and intersex experiences, studying the medicalization of variations in sex characteristics and the medical, legal, and social regulation of sex and gender recognition in childhood. Her work bridges Lacanian psychoanalysis, feminist theory, critical intersex studies, and queer theory. Alongside her academic appointment, she collaborates with the community organization Brújula Intersexual in research, clinical support, and the development of a social bond clinical practice. She has co-edited books including Brújula. Voces de la intersexualidad en México (with Laura Inter; 17, Editorial), Derecho a la identidad de género de niñas, niños y adolescentes (with Hortensia Moreno; Superior Court of Justice of Mexico City), the three-volume collection Conceptos clave en los estudios de género (with Hortensia Moreno; Utópicas / CIEG-UNAM), and a special issue on intersexuality for the journal Debate Feminista.
