Profile

Professor Joerg Alejandro Tellkamp, of German parents, was born in Bogotá (Colombia). His school education took him to various Latin American countries and Germany. He studied philosophy, Hispanic and German literature at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Afterwards, he did a master's degree in philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), and finally he received his doctorate with a thesis on the theory of perception in Thomas Aquinas at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle Wittenberg (Germany). That thesis was published by Brill Publishing House in Leiden (The Netherlands).

His academic career began at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá before moving on to the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. When he arrived in Mexico, he started teaching courses at the Universidad Panamericana, and in 2007 he won a competitive examination at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). He is currently a Professor and a member of SNI, Level II. In 2015 he was appointed editor of the journal Signos Filosófos of the Department of Philosophy, a publication that currently ranks Q4 according to the Scimago Journal Index.

He works mainly in the field of history of philosophy; he has specialized in aspects of theoretical philosophy in medieval thought and social philosophy in Spanish and Mexican Scholasticism of the sixteenth century. In general, it can be said that his research focus corresponds to these two thematic axes and that my publications reflect them in almost equal parts.

His latest publications deal mainly with this second thematic axis, having recently edited the multidisciplinary volume "A Companion to the Early Modern Spanish Imperial Political and Social Thought", Brill, Leiden 2020 (Brill's Companions to European History 21) with the participation of specialists from nine countries. He also translated medieval philosophical texts into Spanish and German for well-known publishers such as Eunsa (in Spain) or Meiner and Herder in Germany. He has approximately 60 publications published in Spanish, German and English and appeared in publishing houses in countries such as Spain, Brazil, United States, Germany, Belgium, France, and Mexico among others.

He is currently working on the first volume of a new collection in Germany on Novo-Hispanic political thought to be published by the Winter Publishing House of the University of Heidelberg.

For 25 years, he has participated in many events and was a guest lecturer at a number of national and foreign universities. He is currently on the board of the Société Internationale pour l'Étude la Philosophie Médiévale based in Leuven which is the oldest and most prestigious association dedicated to medieval thought.
