Profile
Professor María Concepción Gutiérrez Ruiz is a Chemist with a master's degree in Experimental Biology and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology. In 1976, she started working at the Health Sciences Department at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Unidad Iztapalapa, where she continues working. She has held different academic administrative positions, which stands out being the coordinator of the Master and Ph.D. studies of the Biological and Health Sciences Division.
Her field of knowledge is the study of the mechanism of damage and repair of different cell types, both at the cellular and molecular level, by different aggressors such as ethanol, acetaldehyde, lipid, and cholesterol overload, and heavy metals, among others.
Professor Gutiérrez has research collaborations with national and foreign researchers. She has published 121 research articles and 27 book chapters and has directed 40 theses of postgraduate students. She has been teaching for over 44 years at bachelors and graduate levels. In 2005, she was named Distinguished Professor of the University.
She has been a member of decision-making agencies in various educational, scientific, and technological development institutions: President of the evaluation committee for basic research projects in the area of health sciences of CONACYT, member of the Council for the Promotion and Scientific, Technological, and Innovation Development of the Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation of Mexico City; the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán Government Council; member of the commission of evaluation of professors and academic technicians of the Institute of Biomedical Research of UNAM since 2017; and member of the Awards Commission of the Mexican Academy of Sciences in the periods 2010-2012 and 2016-2018. She is currently a member of the UAM Board of Directors.
