Profile

Professor Christof Adolf Gobel is an Architect and urban researcher of German origin, educated at the Technical Universities (TU) of Berlin and Darmstadt. He won the “Ernst May” Prize in 1996 and obtained the Erasmus/ DAAD Scholarship to study at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. Subsequently, he worked at Studio Architetto Mar, Venice, Italy, and at the firm AS&P - Albert Speer & Partner GmbH, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, realizing planning and urban design projects in diverse places such as: Guillin and Chongquin, China, Sea Front Development Project Muscat, Oman, Prince Abdullah Corridor, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He achieved numerous successes in international competitions and exhibitions. Since 2001, he has been carrying out independent work, focused on the project and architectural realization of various residences in the Rhein-Main region, Germany.

From 2004-2005, he made an academic stay as visiting professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Azcapotzalco Campus with a scholarship awarded by CONACyT and InWEnt gGmbH from Germany. Since 2005, he has been a Professor at the UAM Azcapotzalco Campus, Mexico City, and is a member of the research group “International Architecture and Urbanism”. He has been a speaker at national and international events and has organized international colloquia and guided student visits. He is also the author of the book “Aprendizaje social en espacios públicos, CDMX/ Social Learning in Public Spaces, Mexico City” (2019) and has written articles and essays published in specialized magazines and collective books internationally. Additionally, he has been a compiler and co-author of several books.

Since 2005, he has served as a responsible architect and independent urban planner of various projects in the metropolitan area of Mexico City. He co-founded SITIOS in 2008, an independent laboratory for public space. In 2009, he received his Ph.D. in Urbanism from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, with the thesis: Transformation of Urban Agglomerations in Mexico, 1990-2005 - Case Study: Querétaro. In 2008 and 2010, he has been an external critic at the postgraduate level at the Technical University (TU) in Munich, Germany. From 2010 to 2013, he was Responsible/ Coordinator of Urban Studies of the Postgraduate Program in Design of the Division of Sciences and Arts for Design/ CyAD at the UAM Azcapotzalco Campus. Since 2012, he has been recognized as a Desirable Profile for Full-Time Teachers, Program for Teacher Improvement (PROMEP).

He collaborated as visiting professor/ scientist at TU Munich from 2013 to 2014. Then, he was a Candidate for the National System of Researchers (SNI/ CONACyT) (2014-2016), and serves as Academic Pair in the evaluation process of the National Quality Graduate Program (PNPC) of CONACyT from 2014. From 2015 to 2019, he was Head of the Master, and Ph.D. courses of the Graduate Program of Design and Urban Studies/ CyAD. In 2017, he successfully completed the Habilitation in Urbanism at the post-doctorate level, carried out at the TU of Munich, with the thesis: Different Perspectives of the Public Square in the City of Today. Urban Public Squares in Mexico City as Places for Social Housing, receiving the “Venia Legendi”. From 2017 to 2019 and from 2020 to 2023, he belongs to the National System of Researchers, level I (SNI/ CONACyT). Currently, he has been realizing since 2019 a research stay at the University of Toulouse 2 Jean Jaurès, France, returning to Mexico in 2021.
