Profile
Dr. Maribel Velasco Pérez holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana and earned her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom.
Since 2012, she has been a Research Professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, where she teaches courses related to material and energy balances, wastewater treatment, unit operations, and integrated management of municipal solid waste. She has supervised and co-supervised undergraduate theses in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering, as well as graduate theses in Environmental Science and Engineering. She is the author of articles published in national and international journals and co-author of the book Composting Plants in Mexico: Regulatory Framework and Inventory.
Her research focuses on waste valorization in water treatment processes, municipal solid waste management, and the study of plastic waste and microplastics. She has participated in collaborative projects with public and private sectors on issues related to integrated waste management.
She holds the PRODEP Desirable Profile recognition granted by Mexico’s Ministry of Education and is a member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNII) under SECIHTI.
She served as Coordinator of the Environmental Engineering undergraduate program at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana from 2015 to 2021. She currently serves as Head of the Sustainable Technologies Area in the Department of Energy.
