Profile

Rene David Benítez Rivera is a Professor in the Department of Social Relations at the Xochimilco Campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana.

He studied Hispanic Language and Literature at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and Sociology at the Xochimilco Campus of the UAM, where he obtained a master’s degree in communication and politics, and a Ph.D. in Social Sciences.

He has been a professor at various institutions such as Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México and the Instituto Superior Intercultural Ayuuk.

He is a founding member and has held honorary positions at the Universidad Intercultural de Los Pueblos del Sur. Finally, he has done consulting work in different organizational processes in the states of Guerrero and Puebla, Mexico.

Before joining UAM, he had teaching experiences at the Autonomous University of Mexico City (UACM) and as a guest lecturer at the Intercultural Higher Institute Ayuuk (ISIA). Likewise, he contributed as a founding member of the University of the Peoples of the South (UNISUR) in Guerrero, where he held relevant positions, including coordinating the Bachelor's Degree in Government of Municipalities and Territories and the position of Academic Secretary.

At the editorial level, he has been part of the Editorial Committee of the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities, even presiding over it for a certain period. He has also been a member of the Editorial Committee of the Veredas Journal, demonstrating a commitment to the dissemination of sociological and academic thought.

His investigative and community involvement work stands out for significant projects in the Mixteca region, Puebla, where he has led initiatives to strengthen organization and cooperativism among producers of artisanal salt. Additionally, he has worked on obtaining quality seals for indigenous communities, promoting the recognition and valuation of their products.

Outside the academic sphere, he has actively participated in initiatives to defend the rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples, especially in the states of Guerrero and Puebla. His involvement encompasses various aspects, from building autonomy to promoting indigenous justice and defending territory.

Regarding his academic production, he has contributed to a score of articles in books and scientific journals, addressing relevant topics such as social movements, community organization, and political culture.

Furthermore, he has coordinated the publication of books that delve into political struggles and social movements in Guerrero, consolidating his commitment to research and the dissemination of knowledge.

His participation in collectives like the "Tosenyolotzin A.C." and "Colectivo COMALA" reflects his active commitment to defending human rights and the self-determination of peoples, consolidating his profile as an academic committed to social transformation and justice.
