Profile
Professor Marisa Cabeza Salinas has a Ph.D. in Basic Biomedical Research at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). She has taught numerous courses in Physiology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, and other disciplines, both at the undergraduate level and in Master's and Doctorate degrees, at the UNAM and the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). Since 1972, she began to carry out research work, first at the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Nutritional Diseases as an assistant to a senior researcher at the UAM.
She is the author of numerous publications, both in national journals and in recognized international journals, in which the number of her publications is around 130. She is the author of several books, among which are: Hormones and Reproduction, Mechanism of Action of Steroid Antiandrogens, Physiological, Phylogenetic and Ontogenic Aspects of the Sleep-Wake Cycle, The Cerebellum and Biology of Sensory Systems EL TACTO, edited by the UAM, as well as chapters in different books.
She is the owner of a patent in Pharmaceutical Technology for the development of an anti-acne ointment based on steroidal hormones.
She has directed numerous research works and theses at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. In 1984, she received the award for the best contribution to Pharmacy, which was granted by the Mexican Pharmaceutical Association, as well as an Honorable Mention in the CANIFARMA Award in 2002 and the Award given by the "Jaime Woolrich" Trust of the General Hospital of Mexico in the Area of Clinical Research in Urology and Nephrology in 2003. In 2011, she was awarded the prize for the best paper presented at the Steroid Congress awarded by the Endocrine Society and Elsevier. In 2018, the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Xochimilco Campus distinguished her as the best professor of the year. She belongs to the National System of Researchers and is recognized as a member of the Endocrine Society, USA, and the European Endocrine Society. She is also a member of the National Autonomous University of Mexico's Mentor List in the cell lines of Pharmacology and Reproductive Biology.
She is currently a member of the Department of Biological Systems. She also develops research on the mechanism of action of different steroidal molecules, whether natural or newly synthesized, either with antiandrogenic action, such as drugs to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy and cancer of this gland or with a progestational or antiprogestational effect to treat problems such as endometriosis, topics on which she has numerous publications.
