Profile

Dr. Hortensia Moreno Macías holds a Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science from the Faculty of Sciences at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), a Master's degree in Statistics and Operations Research from the Institute for Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems (IIMAS-UNAM), and both a Master's degree in Biostatistics and a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences with a concentration in Environmental Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed a research fellowship in the Nutrition and Metabolism Section at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France. She holds Level I status in Mexico's National System of Researchers (SNII) and holds PRODEP Desirable Profile recognition.

She specializes in data science and quantitative methods applied to complex social, economic, and health challenges. Her research focuses on developing and applying advanced statistical tools to study complex diseases, genetic epidemiology, public health, and socioeconomic determinants of health, as well as leveraging data science approaches to generate evidence-based insights for public policy design and decision-making. She has established collaborations with Harvard University, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ), and IARC.

At the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Iztapalapa, she promotes the integration of data science, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary training across teaching, research, and academic outreach. She currently serves as principal investigator for the project "Learning with Data: Active Learning for Thinking, Problem Solving, and Data-Driven Evidence." Her professional contributions encompass supervising undergraduate, Master's, and doctoral students across economics, public health, biostatistics, epidemiology, and biomedical sciences, fostering educational innovation in analytical skills, and building collaborative interdisciplinary research communities.
