Profile

Professor Hortensia Moreno Macias is an Actuary graduated from the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). She has a master's degree in Statistics and Operations Research from the Institute for Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems of the UNAM. She also completed a master's degree in Biostatistics and a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences with a concentration in environmental epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed a three-month research stay at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in the Nutrition and Metabolism section (Lyon, France).

Through a collaboration agreement between UAM and the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán, she has participated in the identification of genetic variants of susceptibility to type 2 diabetes in the Mexican mestizo population. She also participates in the analysis of risk factors for metabolic diseases and cancer. She has advised master's and doctoral theses at the Mexican School of Public Health of the National Institute of Public Health.

She is a tutor in the Master's and Doctoral Medical, Dental, and Health Sciences program. At the UAM, she has advised a couple of theses in the Doctoral Program in Biological and Health Sciences. She is currently directing a Master's thesis in Social Economics in the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Iztapalapa Campus and another thesis in the Master's program in Applied and Industrial Mathematics in the Division of Basic Sciences and Engineering also at the Iztapalapa Campus.

Her lines of research are mainly oriented to identifying environmental, social, and genetic risk factors in the development of complex diseases such as diabetes and cancer. She is interested in health as a universal right. The identification of vulnerable groups contributes to the establishment of public policies for the protection of society in general.
